    The short answer

Most travellers need 6 to 8 days for a Tanzania safari. That is enough to visit Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and at least two nights in the Serengeti without rushing. Five days covers the highlights at a faster pace; 9–10 days lets you follow the Great Migration or add a Zanzibar beach finish. Anything shorter than 4 days usually means flying in rather than driving.

Why it takes this long: drive times between parks

Northern Tanzania's parks sit in a line from Arusha to the Serengeti. Drive times, not distances, decide how many days you need.

    RouteTypical drive time
    Arusha to TarangireAbout 2 hours
Tarangire to Karatu or the Ngorongoro rim2–2.5 hours
Ngorongoro to central Serengeti (Seronera)3–4 hours, game viewing on the way
    Central to northern Serengeti4–5 hours
Arusha to the Serengeti by light aircraft1–1.5 hours

The Serengeti is the furthest park and the one most worth your time. Every night you add there means less time in the vehicle and more time with wildlife.

A 6-day plan, day by day

    1. Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire for an afternoon game drive among elephants and baobabs.
    2. Day 2: Tarangire morning, then on to the Ngorongoro highlands.
    3. Day 3: Drive into the Serengeti, game viewing on the way.
    4. Day 4: Full day in the Serengeti, following where the wildlife is.
    5. Day 5: Serengeti morning, then back to the Ngorongoro rim or Karatu.
    6. Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater game drive, then return to Arusha.

This is the route of our 6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari. With 2 more days you can add a second Serengeti area, such as Ndutu in the calving season or the north for the river crossings.

    Adding Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro

    • Zanzibar beach: add 3–5 nights after your safari. A short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha gets you there the same day. See our bush and beach safaris.
    • Climbing Kilimanjaro: the climb itself takes 6–8 days, plus a rest day before your safari. Most climbers combine it with a 3–5 day safari afterwards. See climbing Kilimanjaro.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for a Tanzania safari?

Yes, for the highlights. Five days covers Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, but with only one or two Serengeti nights and longer drives. Six or seven days is more comfortable.

Is 3 days enough for a safari in Tanzania?

Three days works for Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater by road. To include the Serengeti in 3 days, fly in and out.

How many days do you need in the Serengeti?

At least 2 nights, ideally 3–4, split between two areas such as central Serengeti and wherever the migration is at the time.

How many days for a safari and Zanzibar?

Allow 10–12 days: 6–7 days on safari and 3–5 nights on the beach.

Is 10 days too long for a safari?

Not if you vary it. Ten days lets you see several Serengeti areas, add a walking safari or balloon flight, or finish on Zanzibar.
