Overview
A jewel of the Rift Valley — groundwater forests, hot springs, flamingo-pink shores and the famous tree-climbing lions.
Ernest Hemingway called Manyara 'the loveliest I had seen in Africa.' Two-thirds of the park is water: a shallow alkaline lake that draws thousands of pink flamingos and pelicans.
The narrow strip of land between the escarpment and the lake supports diverse habitats — groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and open floodplains — packed into a compact area perfect for a one-day visit.
Manyara's lions are famous for their unusual habit of lounging in the branches of acacia and sausage trees, an adaptation seen in only a few places in Africa.
