Overview
Just south of Nungwi, Kendwa offers the same tide-free swimming with a softer, more laid-back mood. Powder-fine sand slopes gently into calm turquoise water, and the west-facing beach delivers Zanzibar's most theatrical sunsets. Monthly Full Moon parties draw a fun crowd without dominating the coastline.

Best time to visit
Year-round swimming; best light and calm seas Jun – Oct
West-facing coast — arrive by late afternoon for the best sunset views.
How to get there
Approximately 63 km north of Stone Town — about 90 minutes by road from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ).
Private road transfer is the standard option and pre-arranged with your lodge.
Easily combined with Nungwi (10 minutes apart) for a longer north-coast stay.
Tucked on the north-western tip of Zanzibar, Kendwa Beach is where the island unwinds. A long crescent of powder-white sand slopes gently into calm turquoise water, and — unusually for Zanzibar — the tide barely retreats, so swimming is beautiful from sunrise to well after dark.
Just ten minutes south of Nungwi, Kendwa trades the busy resort strip for a softer, more laid-back mood. It is the island's sunset stage: west-facing, uninterrupted, and famously theatrical.
Why visit
Kendwa is perfect for honeymooners, families and travellers who want the classic Zanzibar postcard without the crowds. Expect all-day swimming, beachfront resorts, sunset dhow sails, snorkelling trips to Mnemba Atoll, and the island's most celebrated Full Moon parties once a month.
Chapter one
Kendwa began — like most of northern Zanzibar — as a small fishing community whose livelihoods followed the reef and the monsoon winds. Dhow builders and fishermen still work the shoreline in the early morning before the beach fills with parasols.
In the last twenty years Kendwa has grown into one of Zanzibar's signature beach destinations, but development has stayed low-rise and low-key, and the village rhythm still shapes the day.
Not to miss
One of the few beaches on Zanzibar with almost no tidal change — soft white sand and calm, swimmable turquoise water throughout the day.
West-facing and uninterrupted, Kendwa is the island's premier sunset spot. Arrive by late afternoon for cocktails on the sand as the sky turns pink and gold.
Held once a month at Kendwa Rocks, this legendary beach party draws travellers from across the island — lively but contained to a single stretch of sand.
A short boat ride away, Mnemba is one of the Indian Ocean's finest snorkelling and diving reserves, alive with reef fish, turtles and dolphins.
Snorkel and scuba dive among colourful coral gardens alive with reef fish, sea turtles, rays, octopus and occasional dolphins — plus kayaking, paddleboarding and deep-sea fishing straight off the beach.
Sail out on a traditional wooden dhow with sundowners and fresh seafood as the sun drops into the sea — Kendwa's signature evening ritual.
Living heritage
Kendwa remains a working coastal village at heart. Fishermen bring in the catch at dawn, women sell fruit and kikoi cloth along the sand, and dhow builders continue a craft that has shaped this coastline for centuries.
