    Safari Overview

6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

The 6 Days Machame Route — the 'Whiskey Route' — is Kilimanjaro's most scenic ascent, combining dramatic landscapes across five ecological zones with a challenging climb-high, sleep-low profile.

Ideal for experienced trekkers with good fitness and limited time. The itinerary omits the extra Karanga Camp night for a shorter, tougher climb to Uhuru Peak.

    Frequently asked questions

    About this itinerary

Challenging — long trekking days and a demanding summit night. Recommended for fit trekkers with previous multi-day hiking experience.
Around 85% on our 6-day Machame profile. The 7-day version with a Karanga Camp night pushes success above 90%.
No — Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek. The Barranco Wall involves easy scrambling with hands but no ropes or gear.
A full layering system, insulated summit jacket, four-season sleeping bag, boots and headlamp. We share a full packing list and rent quality gear locally.

    Planning your safari

The Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) over 6–8 days delivers the classic Big Five experience, the Great Migration, and easy logistics from Kilimanjaro Airport.
6–8 days is the sweet spot for the Northern Circuit. Add 3–4 nights in Zanzibar for a beach extension, or extend to 10–12 days to include a fly-in to Ruaha or Nyerere.
For July–October and Christmas/New Year we recommend booking 8–12 months ahead. Green season (March–May) can be booked 3–4 months out.
Yes. Most camps welcome children from age 6, and family-friendly lodges accept younger kids with private vehicles. We tailor pace, activities and lodges to your family.
Absolutely — this is one of our most popular combinations. Daily flights connect the Serengeti to Zanzibar in about 2.5 hours.
Technically yes, but we strongly recommend against it. Roads are unmarked, wildlife is unpredictable, and park regulations are strict. A trained driver-guide multiplies your sightings tenfold.
Yes. Many of our guests travel solo. Private guides mean you're never alone, and our small-group departures let you meet like-minded travelers.
Absolutely. Most guests add 6–8 days on safari after a Kili summit, or start with a safari to acclimatise to the bush before the mountain. We handle all logistics as one seamless Tanzania trip.
