Overview
Tracking wild chimpanzees through montane rainforest, then swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika.
Mahale is one of the most remote and beautiful parks in Africa. Reachable only by small plane and dhow, its forested peaks rise straight from the shore of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second-deepest lake.
The park protects around 1,000 wild chimpanzees, including the 60-strong Mimikere ('M') group habituated for research since the 1960s. Guided treks lead visitors deep into the forest to spend an hour with our closest relatives.
Afternoons are for kayaking, snorkelling with cichlid fish, or reading a book in a hammock on the beach — an unusual pairing of adventure and pure barefoot luxury.
