Great Migration

The Great Migration is an annual journey where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores move across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in East Africa. Every year, these animals travel to find fresh grazing lands and water.

During this migration, they face many dangers. For example, they must cross crocodile-infested rivers. Also, predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are constantly nearby. Because of this, the Great Migration is one of the most thrilling wildlife events in the world.

The migration usually starts in Tanzania’s southern Serengeti around January. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born then. As the months go by, the herds move northwest toward Kenya’s Maasai Mara by July or August. Later, around October, they return south to complete the cycle.

This event offers unique safari experiences year-round. You can see newborn calves, vast herds grazing on fresh grass, or tense river crossings. Consequently, the Great Migration is a top highlight for visitors to Tanzania and Kenya.

Watching the Great Migration requires good timing and expert guidance. Many tour operators plan safaris around this natural wonder. Additionally, you can enjoy game drives, walking safaris, or hot air balloon rides for stunning aerial views.
