How to prepare for Tanzania safari tours ?

You probably have an “all-inclusive package” if you’ve booked a Tanzania safari tours, which means that your meals and accommodations have already been planned as part of your safari experience.

So, what is there left to do – just pack your bags and set off.

In any case, we have outlined a few additional things you may want to consider before travelling to Tanzania. This page helps you get prepared for your safari in Tanzania with information on required documents, suggested vaccines, and even a suggested packing list.

If you’re interested in learning about what to expect on a safari in Tanzania, check out this page.

Flights Tanzania

Tanzania has three international airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR), and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar (ZNZ).

It’s important that you book your arrival flight at the airport that is most convenient for your safari considering Tanzania is a large country and these airports are separated far from one another, the recommended airport is JRO. This will save you both time and money since, even though flying into Dar Es Salaam initially seems less expensive, if you’re going on safari in one of the northern parks, you’ll also need to spend the night in a hotel and take a connecting flight to Kilimanjaro or take a long bus ride or other methods of transport (up to 12 hours’ drive!).

Furthermore, it might not be a terrible idea to take a connecting flight directly to the nearby Arusha airport rather than Kilimanjaro International if you are starting your safari to Northern Tanzania from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam. You won’t need to travel another 40 km to the beginning of your safari because we will pick you up right there.

Generally, it is preferable to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is about 50 kilometres from Arusha town—the town’s safari hub. This is the departure point for the majority of safaris.

Once you’ve booked your flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport, let us know the details about your flight and we’ll arrange a pick-up for you there. Williamson Adventures offers a pick-up and transfer service from JRO to the hotel of your choice. To make your arrival in Tanzania simple, we have a fleet of roomy Toyota vans with enough space for you and your entire travel group (including luggage!).

Necessary documents and more

Passport

For travel to Tanzania, you must have a valid passport. Moreover, your passport must still be valid 6 months after arriving in Tanzania. The passport must also contain three to four blank pages for stamps for immigration and visa. We also recommend you carry a copy of your passport with you as a standard travel protective measure.

Vaccinations

Visitors travelling in Tanzania are currently required to receive the Yellow Fever vaccine. If you have travelled from or spent more than 12 hours in a country at risk for yellow fever before arriving in Tanzania, you must do this. Keep your card with you at all times as you may be asked to provide the vaccination card as proof.

The list of countries with a high risk of yellow fever transmission

Your doctor may suggest further vaccinations for travel to Tanzania. Read more about that in this article.

As of May 2021: Tanzania has recently changed their requirements to address concerns about COVID-19 and the global pandemic. Please contact our team for updated and accurate information.

visas and immigration

For your safari in Tanzania, you will need a visitor visa. For nationals of many nations, this common visa can be obtained hassle-free at the airport upon arrival, or in advance using Tanzania’s e-visa, readily available online through the Tanzania Immigration Department website. Otherwise, you will be required to stand in line with other travellers to obtain a regular visa, thus we strongly advise applying online.

To find out if you are eligible for a visa, or need to apply in advance by reading our article on immigration and visas.

Travel Insurance

It is a good idea to arrange travel insurance. There are many options available for only trip-related activities such as flights and baggage, or more in-depth coverage for medical expenses incurred during your travels.

You must have travel insurance if you plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. To find out more about arranging travel insurance, get in contact with our team. We can also help you in obtaining a good insurance package.

Money

You won’t need a lot of cash while visiting Tanzania because of the all-inclusive safari packages. However, there are a few circumstances where you may need to have some cash with you in local currency or USD, such as going out for drinks, purchasing souvenirs, and tipping Hospitality staff.

However, there are a few circumstances where you may need to have some cash with you in local currency or USD, such as going out for drinks, purchasing souvenirs, and tipping Hospitality staff.

Inform your bank that you will be travelling before you leave for your holiday. Prepare your credit and/or debit cards for use internationally.

Make sure your PIN is four digits long to comply with Tanzanian ATMs.

Many banks in Tanzania provide foreign exchange services if you want to bring cash to exchange. While other currencies might not be as simple to exchange, US dollars, Euros, or British Pounds typically receive reasonable exchange rates.

Only Tanzania’s towns and cities normally have ATMs and banks that offer currency exchange. If you plan to bring cash to the Serengeti or another national park, Arusha or Moshi are great places to exchange money. Nearly everywhere accepts payments in USD, however, you’ll need Tanzanian shillings to shop at the local supermarket.

Pack your luggage

Check out our in-depth packing list for safaris in Tanzania here.

And, if you’re planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, there is a packing and gear list here.

A safari packing list should consist of thin layers and decent clothes. Tanzania’s climate is warm, however, the highlands and northern regions can experience chilly evenings and early mornings. Tanzania is situated on the equator; therefore a hat and sunscreen are both highly advised due to the intense afternoon sun.

Although you won’t need expensive shoes or high heels, purchasing a good pair of walking shoes is a wise move, particularly if you enjoy taking nighttime walks or considering going on a walking safari in Arusha National Park.

Contrary to what the media (and a large number of visitors to Tanzania) portray, there is no prescribed “safari uniform” in Tanzania. However, there is some logic behind this all-khaki attire; neutral colours, in light and quick-drying fabrics are a great choice for clothes while on safari. You certainly are not expected to pack only khaki-coloured items, but you may find that wearing neutral tones is a better bet for keeping your clothes cleaner from dust and mud.

There is a popular misconception that coloured clothes may scare animals. This is not true: to the best of our knowledge most animals see in black-and-white, and they don’t care about the colour of your clothes. They do not discern between a safari car and passengers and perceive them as a whole.

Overall, feel free to pack whatever you like, but be mindful: camouflage clothes are reserved exclusively for members of the Tanzania People’s Defense Force. General khaki clothes are allowed.

Make sure to pack:

  • A light jacket or sweater
  • Several long-sleeved shirts
  • Hat or cap for sun protection
  • 1 or 2 pairs of sturdy, comfortable trousers
  • Swimsuit (many lodges have swimming pools)
  • Pair of comfortable shoes for walking

Other Items

Binoculars, should I bring them?

There is no need to bring your own since Williamson Tanzania’s safari cars offer travellers binoculars and books about wildlife and birds. Of course, if you prefer to use your own, feel free to bring it along.

Of course, if you prefer to use your own, feel free to bring it along.

What type of electric outlets are used in Tanzania?

Tanzania commonly utilizes a three-pronged plug, sometimes known as a “G plug,” just like the UK. If you are travelling from a nation that utilizes a different style of electric plug, you can either bring your adaptor with you or easily buy one once you reach Tanzania.

The hotels provide socket adapters to anyone having European-type power plugs. You will also find some in our safari cars.

Bring a USB cable for your electronics.

You can keep your phone or camera charged throughout the drive in National Parks because our safari cars  are equipped with USB charging ports inside

Is clean drinking water available?

Every day of your safari, your Williamson Adventures guide will provide you 1.5 liters of bottled drinking water. Of course, if you need more, there will be more. Moreover, you will usually find safe, clean drinking water in your hotel or lodge.

How about a snack?

You are welcome to bring your own snacks, but your safari excursion will include a boxed lunch or a hot lunch. The boxed lunch is frequently extremely filling for guests, but sometimes some want a bit of extra before supper.

If you have dietary restrictions, it would be a good idea to bring your favourite snack items from home. However, if you’d like to try some Tanzanian snacks, your safari guide should be willing to assist you to find some local doughnuts, peanuts, or fresh fruits like bananas or mangos in shops close to the national parks.

7 day Kilimanjaro Climb Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro 7 days Lemosho was an experience of a lifetime. The trek to the summit was challenging, but the breathtaking views and sense of accomplishment made it all worth it. The scenery was absolutely stunning, from the lush rainforest at the base to the barren, lunar-like landscape at the summit. The guides were knowledgeable and supportive, and the porters were incredibly helpful in carrying our gear. The final summit push was grueling, but the sunrise from the top was truly unforgettable. Despite the physical demands, I would highly recommend Williamson Adventures for Kilimanjaro climb to anyone looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The sense of camaraderie among the climbers, the challenge of reaching the summit and the stunning beauty of the mountain made it an experience I will never forget.
