3 Days Climbing Mount Meru

Overview

Embarking on a captivating three-day journey, the Mount Meru climbing itinerary begins with an early departure from Arusha to the Momella Gate. This serves as the gateway to the ascent, where trekkers register, meet their guides and porters, and venture into the forest, encountering wildlife amidst the lush scenery. Day one concludes at Miriakamba Hut, providing a tranquil resting place. The following day involves a gradual ascent to Saddle Hut, nestled in the heather zone. After a period of rest and acclimatization, the climbers embark on the exhilarating midnight summit push, reaching Socialist Peak in time for a spectacular sunrise. The descent includes a brief stop at Saddle Hut before concluding at Momella Gate, where climbers sign out and receive their well-earned summit certificates. Essential tips for acclimatization, proper packing, the support of guides and porters, and maintaining physical fitness are emphasized throughout this challenging yet rewarding adventure.

Itinerary

Elevation : 1,500m to 2,514m

Start early from Arusha to the Momella Gate, the starting point for the Mount Meru climb. Register with the park authorities, meet your guide and porters, and begin the trek. Hike through the forest, where you might encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut in the afternoon. Rest and enjoy dinner at the hut. An acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) is an option but not mandatory.

Elevation : 2,514m to 3,570m

After breakfast, continue the ascent through the forest and into the heather zone. Reach Saddle Hut in the afternoon. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing. Have an early dinner to prepare for the summit push.

Elevation : 3,570m to 4,566m

Start the summit push around midnight with headlamps. Reach the summit, Socialist Peak, in time for sunrise. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit. Descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest and breakfast. Continue the descent to Momella Gate. Sign out with the park authorities and collect your summit certificate. Transfer back to Arusha.
